Optimizing corporate management process to manage project activities
Being out of the main business focus for the big part of process-driven companies, projects that still inevitably exist don't match many management processes. They often don't fit the budgeting system, have no affect on compensation and benefits system; lack proper direction and control due to dominant "functional structure" management, and finally projects do not always conform to corporate strategy and main business goals.
Nevertheless project management is the only way to run organizational development. Therefore integration of all project management processes in corporate management system is a prerequisite of most companies' strategic success. And it always requires that:
- Projects being started be verified against general strategy course of the company and tactic goals
- Appropriate authority and responsibility be given to project managers and their role be explained to the other managers and staff, introducing necessary changes into organizational structure and balance of power;
- Staff members assigned to projects be trained and motivated to strive for projects' objectives and success;
- Project budgets and other resources be coherently planned and integrated into the enterprise resource management system.
Besides the imperative changes stated above, it is often necessary to pay special attention to adjustments in organizational culture and personnel attitude towards project management and its tools. This requires project management process introduction in a company to be a complex initiative backed up with a strong upper management support, and not limited to single BPR or project management information system implementation project.
