We are pleased to present “Waltzing with Bears. Managing Risk on Software Projects” by Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister.

In this book Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister show readers how to identify and embrace worthwhile risks.

«Running away from risk is a no-win proposition. In the past, you may have looked at such an endeavor as a slam dunk and thanked your lucky stars to be given an easy project for a change. We’ve had the same reaction. What dummies we were! Projects with no real risks are losers.

Risks and benefits always go hand to hand. Companies that run away from risk and focus on what they know they can do well are ceding the field to their adversaries. The reason that a project is full of risk is that leads you into uncharted waters. It stretches your capability, which means that if you pull it off successfully, it’s going to drive your competition batty. The ultimate coup is to stretch your own capability to a point beyond the competition’s ability to respond».

B eing out of the main business focus for the big part of process-driven companies, projects that still inevitably exist don't match many management processes. They often don't fit the budgeting system, have no affect on compensation and benefits system; lack proper direction and control due to dominant "functional structure" management, and finally projects do not always conform to corporate strategy and main business goals...

Based on the ongoing and thoroughly debugged project management processes, the implementation of the information system may ensure considerable reduction of the company's costs and open the new possibilities.
